She has even been referred to as the &#8220;Godmother of Punk.&#8221; Smith was born in Chicago, though her family moved to New Jersey. She eventually made her way to New York; had relationships with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe,\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Blue \u00d6yster Cult keyboardist Allen Lanier, and Fred &#8220;Sonic&#8221; Smith whom she married and had two children with; and formed The Patti Smith Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Patti Smith Group was signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records and in 1975 released their first album, <em>Horses<\/em>; a fusion of punk rock and spoken word poetry. \u00a0The album cover is a photograph of Patti Smith that was taken by Mapplethorpe, and is highly regarded as one of the classic album covers of rock music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abigailm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/PattiSmithHorses.jpg\" alt=\"PattiSmithHorses\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.abigailm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/PattiSmithHorses.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.abigailm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/PattiSmithHorses-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><a title=\"Horses cover\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horses_(album)#mediaviewer\/File:PattiSmithHorses.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1978 The Patti Smith group released their third album\u00a0<em>Easter<\/em> featuring the song &#8220;Because the Night&#8221; which was co-written by Bruce Springsteen. &#8220;Because the Night&#8221; was the band&#8217;s most commercially successful song, making its way to number 13 on the <a title=\"Billboard Hot 100 wiki page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100<\/a> chart<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__thK4t6H9Y?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nPatti Smith performing &#8220;Because the Night&#8221; at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 14th, 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2005 \u00a0the French Ministry of Culture named Patti Smith a\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Commander of the\u00a0<a title=\"Order of Arts and Letters wiki page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ordre_des_Arts_et_des_Lettres\" target=\"_blank\">Ordre des Arts et des Lettres<\/a> (Order of Arts and Letters),\u00a0and in 2007 she was inducted into\u00a0<a title=\"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, who is Patti Smith?
